Supporting Teens at Risk for Suicide (STARS) is a workshop to assist organizations in developing standardized
policies and procedures to support best practices in suicide intervention. STARS utilizes a trauma-informed
response to youth and their caregivers when risk for suicide is identified.
The workshop is provided virtually in 2-hour increments over 3 sessions:
Part 1: Understanding suicide & suicide prevention in youth-serving organizations; Set up for intervention
Part 2: Assessment and Triage with the CSSRS; Collaborative intervention & referral
Part 3: Intervention with safety planning & safe return to program; Documentation; Safety for caregivers
We recognized that staff at your organization play a limited yet essential role when it comes to helping a youth
who may be at risk for suicide. Within and across youth-serving organizations, practices vary widely in managing
youth at risk for suicide. Such variability may leave responsible staff susceptible to role confusion and lacking
confidence in how to properly support a youth who is suicidal. This skills-based and practice-oriented workshop
is designed to prepare your workforce to implement standardized procedures for intervention that reflect best
practice for helping youth at risk. Participants will learn how to:
• Recognize warning signs of suicide and common theoretical foundations to suicide.
• Provide a brief assessment utilizing the CSSRS brief screener
• Refer to an appropriate level of care
• Develop a safety plan
• Put ongoing supports in place
• Identifying the importance of shared responsibility
As a follow-up to this workshop, up to ten (10) hours of technical assistance and implementation support can
be provided to ensure the newly developed policies and procedures are put into practice smoothly within the
organization.
Who should attend? senior staff, supervisors, case managers, and administrators of youth-serving organizations
